Restoring Gulshan-Banani Lake Together: Reflections from the RE-WET Experience Sharing Event

Can restoring a wetland also strengthen climate resilience, livelihoods, and community ownership? No single institution can build a climate-resilient city alone.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and River & Delta Research Centre (RDRC) jointly organized the RE-WET Experience Sharing Event, bringing together public institutions, development practitioners, researchers, community actors, local stakeholders, and media to reflect on lessons from the restoration and sustainable management of Gulshan-Banani Lake.

The event was chaired by Brigadier General Syed Rakibul Hasan, Chief Engineer, DNCC, and attended by Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, Administrator, DNCC. Dr. Efadul Huq, RE-WET Co-Lead and Assistant Professor at Smith College, USA, presented the keynote paper. Beth Downey, Programme Manager at IIED, UK, joined as special guest.

The discussions highlighted a clear message: when communities, local government, and researchers share responsibility, nature-based solutions become practical and lasting. The RE-WET experience offers a hopeful example of how collaboration can help build a more climate-resilient Dhaka.
